Nickels Dec 2018

Merry Christmas to you all from Tanzania. December is probably a very busy month for you. Imagine if added to all the holiday and year-end celebrations, you also had all the commitments of May and June. Here in Tanzania the school year wraps up at the end of the calendar year. In addition to the many school, church, community, and family events that you would expect in December, we at Rafiki are conducting assessments for students in preschool through seventh grade, practicing pieces for our recitation, planning for the coming school year, and doing everything we can to complete construction on the science labs for the secondary school. Is it possible to do it all? With God’s help and a great team: yes!

Just today, Primary Three students were in the library turning in their final books of the year. Gian carefully placed the card back in the pocket of his and said fondly, “Good-bye book! I will miss you so much!”

Also in the library, Primary One teacher, Madam Ayeness, was giving a one-on-one reading assessment to a struggling student. As the little girl slowly traced her way down a list of more than 100 sight words, Ayeness showed no sign that she still had many more students to assess, final grades to calculate, and her own wedding coming up in only a week.

Over in the new headmistress’s office, several Primary Six students were working on diction and expression in preparation for presenting memorized poetry at the year-end recitation. The girls’ pacing has improved, but the performance needs polishing before the big day.

Behind the Junior Secondary building, construction continues on the science labs. Phil was at the top of a ladder, problem-solving with the new roofing material. We’re working and praying to have everything needed complete in time to have the secondary school registered by 2019.

During this very full season, we are so thankful for your support and encouragement through finances, kind words, and prayer. 2018 has been a year when God has answered many of our earnest prayers with, “Wait,” and even, “No.” Please join us in praying that God will guide our work to accomplish His purposes in the coming year.

May you know the joy of Emmanuel, God With Us, this Christmas and throughout the coming year.
