Hubbard Jul 2019

I have been in Ghana for three months now, and they have been incredible but very busy. I have spent them learning and adjusting to the Plant Maintenance position. For me it is different than what I have done in the past but the same in many regards. I have always worked in sports as an Equipment Manager or a Salesman; I never really performed any real maintenance or repairs. The first task I did once I arrived at the Village was unclog a sink. Scott, the Village Administrator, explained the water and electrical system for the Village and I realized that I was in over my head. It is easy for us to feel that way. I knew I had no choice but to trust that God was in control. Three months in, I am still in over my head but by God’s grace, I am learning every day.

Life in Ghana has been easier to adjust to than I thought it would be. The Ghanaian people are such loving and caring people. They are people that enjoy a peaceful life. These past few months have been a real joy to spend time with them and learn their culture. Many of our National Staff have spent time teaching me the culture. I have been trying to learn some of the local languages but that has been harder than I realized it would be. I am thankful that English is the official language of Ghana so we can still communicate. In many cases when a missionary goes to another country, they have to spend months or even years to learn the local language. After just three months of working to learn just a few terms and phrases, I have a new found respect for those who learn a second language.

The kids that are in the Ghana Village are some of the oldest kids we have in all of Rafiki. Most of the kids are close to the teenage years. It has been fun to spend time and work with them. They are a delight to be around and invest in their lives.

We are currently in the middle of break for the school. They have four ten-week-long terms and four three-week breaks. As I write this, we are just beginning our second week of break. The kids have been excited because an American football coach from the States has come over for two weeks. The children have loved playing sports and games with him. When these Short-term Missionaries visit, the kids love spending time with them.

I love to go and walk outside the Village and see the community. I enjoy it as I get to take in the local culture and pray for the people as I walk. I will buy fruit and eggs from the local vendors. They are each hard-working people who are working to support their families.

I am prayerful that the next three months will be filled with joy in Christ as He works through me with the kids and community around the Rafiki Village in Ghana. Our Lord is doing amazing things here in Ghana and I am proud to be a part of His work.

My prayer requests are:

• Funding for year two

• To continue to learn Plant Maintenance
and the culture

• To continue to learn the language and customs

• For my family back in the States
