“And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord’ ”
(Luke 2:10-11).

Merry Christmas to all!

When is the last time you have heard good news of great joy? We at Rafiki Village Malawi are rejoicing over many items of good news this holiday season, I will share just a few of them with you so you can rejoice, too!

Two of our older girls, Justina and Estery, were selected to join a team going to Durban, South Africa for the Zone VI volleyball tournament. We rejoice that God has given them the talents and that they had the opportunity to go! It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these two young women! Rejoice with us as our student athletes continue to hone their God-given talents and develop their skills.

Laurine, our eldest girl, turned eighteen at the end of November. Here in Malawi that is considered “adulthood.” She is aspiring to become a doctor and was thrilled to receive a copy of Ben Carson’s book, Gifted Hands as her coming-of-age present. We celebrated her growth physically and spiritually with cake and a joyful rendition of Happy Birthday from all her Rafiki siblings. Rejoice with us as more and more children mature in their knowledge of God and grow in every way.

In November we received a new Village Administrator from Rafiki Village Uganda, Yeen-Lan Lam. Her energy and zeal are inspiring. Hailing from Singapore, her service with Rafiki has lasted over twenty years and she brings much experience to the Village. Rejoice with us and pray for Yeen-Lan to have wisdom as she learns about Rafiki Village Malawi.

Finally, we rejoice because God is drawing many students near to Himself through His Son. The Christmas season remembers the birth of Christ, our Savior who is the object of our faith. Without Christmas, without the good news of great joy, knowing God would not have been possible. We thank God for His plan for our lives and for His saving power. Recently in the school, three students from a home where the Bible is not taught understood the gospel, the good news, for the first time and realized their need for a Savior. Rejoice with us as we disciple these three students and continue spreading the good news!

The good news of great joy is why I am here, not to merely make a difference in education, though that is important and one of my life’s biggest passions. This great joy Luke speaks of, or as Paul calls it in 2 Corinthians 9:15 an “inexpressible gift!” of Jesus’ birth is what we celebrate and what Christmas is all about.

I have decided to continue partaking of the many great joys God is working here in Malawi and will be serving another term here in Malawi. Rejoice with me this Christmas season for all the good things God has done this year, and for the inexpressible gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
