Andrea and Scott Nelson

Serving In: Ghana
External ID: 226

Andrea and Scott Nelson have been servants at Rafiki Village Ghana for three years. Currently, Andrea is the ChildCare Administrator, Co-scholarship Coordinator, and Widow’s Coordinator. Scott is the Village Administrator, Plant Manager, Finance Manager, and Co-scholarship Coordinator. God guided the Nelsons to Rafiki after they read an interview with Rosemary Jensen in Tabletalk Magazine.

They felt that Rafiki was a good match for them because of its commitment to in-depth Bible study, long-term discipleship of orphans and national workers, Reformed theology, and Classical Education. Specifically, Andrea was excited to see on the Rafiki website that there was a need for artists! Scott enjoys helping others and being a good steward of resources. At the time when the Nelson’s came across Rosemary’s interview, they were considering mission work as their future—after their children, Grace and Ian, were grown. God clearly showed them through a short-term trip to the Rafiki Village Kenya that they could take their whole family to a Rafiki Village! Living in Africa has given Andrea a deeper appreciation for life—each day is a gift. It has also helped her slow down and take time to really greet people and listen to them. For Scott, living in Africa has helped him grow in having patience and showing compassion.

Scott graduated with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and gained almost a decade of production experience at the Boeing Company in Seattle. He then completed courses in the medical field and worked as a Medical Assistant at a Pediatric Clinic for about 4 years. He also worked as a Laboratory Analyst at a beverage production facility. Andrea has a BFA in Communication Design. She was a designer in a marketing design company in Chicago for four years before working for another four years in Christian book publishing. After building up a list of freelance clients, she started her own design company that she managed for seventeen years before going to the field.

Grace and Ian are fourteen and twelve-years-old. Prior to moving to Ghana, they were classically homeschooled. At the Village, they are enjoying a potpourri of educational experiences: partly at home, partly at the Rafiki Village School, and partly through internet courses. They are walking examples of young people who love to learn!
