Sherri and Michael Ritter

Serving In: Liberia
External ID: 166

Sherri and Michael Ritter moved to Africa with Rafiki twelve years ago, helping build the Rafiki Village in Ethiopia. The couple is currently serving in Liberia. Michael is a Village Administrator and Plant Manager and Sherri is the Headmaster and Guest House Coordinator. When they first began their work, they brought their three children to their new home. They say that many people at the time warned them not to raise their older children, ages thirteen, eleven, and nine, on the field. Instead of being swayed, the entire Ritter family decided to follow God’s call, and their children thrived in Africa!

Sherri says that she felt called to the mission field as a young child. Years into their marriage, with their lives already firmly established in Indiana, Michael felt that God was also calling him to full-time missions. They began to seek ways to make their calling a reality. They were introduced to the foundation by former Rafiki missionaries Stu and Marsha Coiner, whom they supported. Having learned about Rafiki from the Coiners, the Ritters simply felt that it was a natural choice. Before entering the field, Michael worked at a custom cabinet company and also did heating, ventilation, and air conditioning installation. Sherri taught elementary school, worked as an instructor at a vocational college, and stayed at home when their children were young.

Since serving together in Ethiopia and Liberia, the couple says that the Bible seems “more alive” to them; it is richer and fuller and touches every aspect of their daily lives. They have learned the value of a simple life, and they see with clear eyes all that God has richly provided for them. Living in Africa has also broadened their perspective of God’s kingdom. Now, they have brothers and sisters in Christ from all around the world! They are thankful that God has used their time as missionaries to continually shape their view of Him and His creation.

“For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:3-5).
