Physically the largest of the Rafiki’s Villages, the Rafiki Training Village Malawi is situated on the hilltop of seventy-three acres in northern Malawi. The largest nearby city is Mzuzu which is approximately two hundred fifty miles north of the nation’s capital of Lilongwe. The Village opened in August of 2005. To date, twenty buildings have been constructed to house the educational and residential facilities of children and staff.
The children love to attend school and enjoy playing football. They take great pleasure in singing and memorizing Bible verses. The Rafiki Training Village Malawi is a place of joy and peace; it is truly a light on the hill for all to see. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).
With a population of a little more than 17 million, Malawi is one of the more densely peopled countries of southeast Africa. It is a landlocked nation, however, Lake Malawi, the “Lake of Stars,” dominates the geography stretching some 300 miles along Malawi’s eastern border. Tobacco, tea, sugar, and cotton are Malawi’s main agricultural exports. Most of the population is rural, living in traditional villages. Malawi is blessed with a rich diversity of flora and fauna and has eleven National Parks or Wildlife Reserves.
