Mphatso's mother died shortly after he was born, and his father remains unknown. After his mother's death Mphatso was placed in the care of his elderly grandmother who was unable to provide for his daily needs. Social welfare services asked the Rafiki Foundation to intervene in his situation, and he arrived at the Rafiki Village Malawi in 2008. Mphatso has learned about Jesus through the Rafiki Bible Study, and he understands that only Jesus can reconcile sinners to God.
